Find the WARDOGS Playtest in Steam, distinguish it from the main game, finish its updates and identify why the client is not ready to play.
Operation brief
Steam Playtest uses an application separate from the main game. It has its own access and playable state, so owning the main game and having a usable test client are separate checks. EVIDENCE / 01Valve: Steam Playtest documentationOpen source (opens in a new tab)

This page is for preparing the test client after access has been granted. If you are still choosing between a pre-order and an invitation request, start with WARDOGS beta access.
Search the library, inspect the title and read the current button or download status. Use the state you see to choose the next check.
| Library or client state | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Only the main WARDOGS entry is visible | Confirm the account and access route; look for the test's separate entry. |
| The Playtest is available to install | Check the destination drive's available space and start that client's installation. |
| Download or update work remains | Let Steam finish; record any explicit download error if it stops. |
| The test opens but login is refused | Check the session window and use the Access Denied guide. |
| Launching closes the application | Record the last visible screen and use the crashing guide. |
BULKHEAD's Closed Beta 02 announcement identifies the session as a scale test with Steam Playtest invitations. Its stated test areas include login, server browsing and entitlements. That context matters when a fully installed client reaches an online error. EVIDENCE / 02BULKHEAD: Closed Beta 02 announcementOpen source (opens in a new tab)
Leave enough time for both the download and any later update. Use the size and progress shown by Steam for your installation; the published storage requirement is not a promise about the current download size or how long your connection will take.
If you installed during an earlier test, reopen Steam and inspect pending work on the Playtest entry. A completed older download does not tell you whether the current session's update has finished. Once it has, launch from that library entry so you know which client you are testing.
Check the current Closed Beta 02 window before troubleshooting a refusal outside the session.
Steam provides file verification under the game's Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Valve recommends this check for missing content or crashes, and says it can take several minutes. EVIDENCE / 03Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game FilesOpen source (opens in a new tab)
Use it on the Playtest entry if the symptoms point to that installation. Record the result and retry the same failing action once, so you know whether anything changed. Verification does not answer whether an invitation has arrived or whether the online test is available.
If the client still closes, the crash guide explains what to capture. If it remains open and displays an access or authentication message, keep that text and follow Access Denied.
For a useful preparation report, include the client name, whether installation and updates completed, the last successful screen, and the exact failure time with a timezone. Say whether this is your first installation or a client retained from an earlier test.
These details let support distinguish an unavailable grant, a local installation issue and a failure during session login. A screenshot of “WARDOGS is in my library” may leave the test client and its state unclear.
